RETREATS

Generally guests at King’s Fold arrive here in one of three ways…

1. Personal Retreats – Individuals and couples are welcome at King’s Fold for their own personal refreshment and renewal – emotionally, spiritually, and physically.  On a personal retreat your time is your own, with the only scheduled items being meals.  Spiritual Direction can usually be made available for those on Personal Retreat if you let us know upon booking.

2. Group Retreats – King’s Fold hosts a number of groups throughout the year – men’s and women’s groups, leadership teams, church groups, ministries, etc.  Well planned group retreats will facilitate listening and fellowship for both the individual and the larger group.  Our sacred spaces and pristine environment can enhance a group’s retreat experience in rich and unique ways.  We encourage leaders to incorporate time within their schedule for participants to enjoy these spaces.  For Group Retreat fees, please contact us.

3. Themed Retreats – These are the retreats listed below – opportunities for our guests to be at King’s Fold for a retreat on a specific topic – Journaling, Lent, Ignatian Prayer, Photography, Enneagram, etc.  Generally these retreats fill up quickly so it is best to register as soon as possible.

If you are looking to book or looking for more information on any of the above kinds of retreats, please contact us.  And check out our Themed Retreats and other events below.

PERSONAL RETREATS...

While you may not have considered going on a personal spiritual retreat, the lives we lead today create an even greater need for an intentional withdrawal from media, phones, routines, and responsibilities… and a leaning into silence, rest, prayer and reflection.

Individuals and couples come to King’s Fold on personal retreat to…
Rest: embrace silence, prayer, reflection, sleep
Pause: from the demands of daily life; work, family, email, texts, phone calls
Breathe:
slow down, catch your breath and open yourself to God
Listen:
to the still, small voice of God and hear his heart for you
Connect:
with your Creator, yourself and others on the journey
Awaken
: to passion, meaning, love and joy in life

You can choose a one-day getaway, a week-long experience, or anything in between. Long term stays are sometimes available as well. Decide the degree to which you would like companionship on your journey, and whether you wish to fast or feast while on retreat. If you have never been on retreat before and are not sure where to start, we provide a guidebook with suggestions, or you can speak to anyone in our resident community. As well, Spiritual Direction is usually available if arrangements are made at time of booking.

Personal Fasting Retreats… Fasting is the discipline of abstaining from food or pleasure for spiritual purposes.  A fasting retreat offers the retreatant time for uninterrupted reflection on the Word of God and perhaps on his or her own need for direction in some area of life. Guests can take a fasting retreat in the lodge, or we also have private, secluded, fasting cabins set apart from our main guest areas. These cabins are designed to help those seeking God through the disciplines of silence, solitude, and simplicity, while fasting.

We advise that the disciplines of fasting and solitude should not be taken lightly. If you are experiencing loneliness or depression, spending time in solitude may not be helpful. If you have any physical or psychological conditions requiring medication, we ask you to please check with your physician regarding the advisability of solitude and fasting. During a fast of 3 days or more, we may require you to check in with us regarding your welfare. If necessary, after carefull consideration, we may ask you to terminate your fast if we discern it is unsafe to continue.

NEED TO KNOW

SPIRITUAL CONVERSATIONS and SPIRITUAL DIRECTION

– There are 2 Spiritual Directors on site and sessions can usually be booked with them ahead of time. Other Community Members are available as well, for conversations or to provide a listening ear.
– We are all on a journey.  A spiritual director accompanies us on that journey – becoming a sacred companion.  They offer hospitality for the soul – safe and sacred space where encounter with God can take place.  We were never meant to make the journey alone – it is meant to be shared.  One of the ways of sharing the journey is in spiritual direction.  It is a “one-on-one relationship organized around prayer and conversation directed toward deepening intimacy with God… [Spiritual directors] seek to help those with whom they journey, discern the presence and leading of the Spirit of God – the One Jesus sent as our true Spiritual Director” (David Benner, Sacred Companions, p. 17).

If you are interested in finding a spiritual director, contact us and we can recommend several – around Calgary and elsewhere. If you are interested in seeing a spiritual director during your retreat at King’s Fold, please let us know when you book.

RESERVATIONS

– Groups are encouraged to make reservations well in advance for optimum choice of dates. Often dates are booked a year or more in advance.
– Weekends are often busy, so individuals or couples planning a personal weekend retreat are encouraged to book several weeks in advance.
– There is sometimes more room available Sunday through Friday – even on short notice.

VISITORS/TOURS

Please call ahead if you would like a tour. Visitors are asked to check in on arrival.

ON DIVERSITY AND INCLUSIVENESS

As a Christian ministry, we endeavor to live out the example of Jesus Christ.  We practice hospitality without distinction by offering a place of freedom, peace, and welcome to all guests regardless of their beliefs or backgrounds.  We acknowledge and respect diverse traditions, heritages, and experiences.  We will provide the openhearted welcome of God to individuals regardless of their race, religion, culture, gender or sexual orientation.  Use of the facility by groups is determined at the discretion of the King’s Fold Community.

PLEASE KEEP IN MIND...

– King’s Fold is an adult retreat centre.
– Pets do not qualify as guests at King’s Fold.   Please make other arrangements for them.
– Tax receiptable donations to assist in our ministry are appreciated.
– Due to fixed costs for meal preparations, fee adjustments are not made for missed meals.
– Payment for retreats are due at the time of your retreat and can be in the form of cash, cheque, debit or credit card.
– At King’s Fold we encourage you to “unplug,” using your computers, cell phones, tablets and other electronic devices only as they add to your resting and retreating.  Limited internet access is available upon special request.  Guests are requested to limit use of electronic devices to their group’s meeting room and voice calls to the entryway of the Lodge.

WHAT TO BRING...

– sturdy footwear if you are wanting to walk our trails
– your journal if you have one
– your Bible, if reading one is part of your practice
– a warm jacket, even in summer as our nights are cool
– very little in terms of “projects.”  Projects on a retreat can be distracting and can keep one from being open and available to God.  However, simple ones can also be of help in unwinding and letting go (coloring, a novel, knitting, etc).  Try and discern if you are bringing it because you need a distraction or because it will truly assist you in entering into your retreat.  As well, our guests often end up sleeping much more than they anticipated.
– King’s Fold supplies all bedding and towels.  Alarm clocks and hairdryers are available upon request.
