History

sContent171.jpgThe King's Fold Retreat and Renewal Centre is a tiny gem nestled in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies, about one hour's drive northwest of Calgary.  Although the majority of guests come from Alberta, since opening its doors in 1978 the Centre has welcomed many people from as far away as Atlantic Canada, the Pacific Northwest and Southern USA.

The origins of King's Fold go back to the seventies, when the concept of "making a retreat" was new to multitudes of believers outside the Catholic tradition.  A small group of Christians from various churches gently and prayerfully carried the dream of a non-institutional centre of hospitality with a family-like atmosphere that would be a place of rest, renewal and spiritual nurture for God's people.

The dream became a reality in the summer of 1977 when, in response to the faith and prayers of the founding group, God abundantly provided all that was needed to flesh out the vision.  The first provision was an absolutely stunning site: one hundred and sixty-six acres of heavily forested prime recreational land straddling the Ghost River with a spectacular 180º panoramic view of the mountains.  Other provisions included a Christian architect offering his services, several hundred volunteer workers, among them competent carpenters and tradesmen. Many donated materials and an encouraging inflow of cash was received from people who learned what was happening and wanted to be involved.  This was facilitated by the fact that King's Fold was set up as a charitable institution and thus able to issue tax receipts for all donations.  A mortgage was required to complete the task, but land and buildings were completely paid for within ten years.  Since then a sizeable addition has been built as well as a multi-unit condominium for resident staff. Also a beautiful Chapel and Keeper’s Cottage has been added, as well as a greenhouse/solarium; both for quiet reflection, prayer and worship.

King’s Fold offers structured retreats throughout the year, but the original focus of providing a place where individuals and couples could find sanctuary has never been lost.

And so this little gem, nestled in the foothills of the Rockies, has become a significant spiritual resource for various groups, leadership retreats, and people from all walks of life and many faith persuasions.  It fulfills its mission by welcoming people into a sacred space where God delights to make Himself known to those who set aside time to seek Him.
